Transitional Readiness

Prepare your child for our Transitional Program

This information is for children transitioning from our Baby & Toddler Program (where a parent or guardian is present in the pool with their child at all times) to independent swimming by themselves.

Children will achieve this amazing milestone when they are ready and able. A time limit and strong expectations about this being age-related, will only serve to confuse and undermine a child’s confidence. Before any child can swim alone they have to reach a certain level of confidence and competence in each developed skill.

These developed skills are:

  • physical
  • intellectual
  • social
  • emotional

Unaided swimming requires the ability to perform, in a coordinated manner, a high level of complex skills.

Your child will learn:

  • To sit on the step and participate in a group transitional lesson.
  • To understand what is required and take direction from their swimming teacher.
  • Gain physical stamina and co-ordination.
  • To gain confidence independently and for parents to allow their child to take up to 2- 3 months to feel settled in a transitional lesson.

All children progress at an individual pace and this is why teachers and parents need to work closely together to encourage confidence in this new structured environment.
